The Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab government has launched the Agricultural Infrastructure Fund (AIF) to provide low-interest loans to farmers, aiming to reduce reliance on high-interest loans, a key factor in farmer suicides. By December 31, 2023, Punjab’s banks approved 8,515 projects worth over Rs. 3,500 crore, with beneficiaries receiving Rs. 2,044 crore in loans. The Punjab Horticulture Department has set up a State Project Monitoring Unit (SPMU) to oversee the initiative and ensure collaboration among stakeholders. A WhatsApp helpline (9056092906) has been established to assist farmers, offering loans up to Rs. 2 crore with a 3% interest subsidy.
