The UK festival industry is facing a challenging 2024, with 72 festivals cancelled, postponed, or ending operations, doubling last year’s figures. The Association of Independent Festivals (AIF) reported that 204 events have been lost since 2019, with nearly half occurring during the COVID-19 pandemic. AIF CEO John Rostron described the situation as a “devastating period,” driven by economic issues, high inflation, and changing consumer habits. The AIF has called for government support, including reducing VAT on tickets, but current measures are deemed insufficient. The sector’s future remains uncertain as many events struggle to survive.
