At a workshop in Chümoukedima on October 14, Samuel Praveen Kumar, Joint Secretary of the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, addressed the challenges of post-harvest losses in India’s agriculture. Despite producing around 330 million tons of foodgrains and 350 million tons of horticultural crops annually, losses range from 8-10% for foodgrains to 30-35% for horticulture, wasting around 100 million tons. Kumar emphasized the importance of the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) under the Atmanirbhar Bharat program to improve infrastructure, reduce waste, and promote technology adoption. He encouraged collaboration among stakeholders to enhance agricultural productivity and farmer income.
